Hop on for a cushy ride

The cushion revolution undoubtedly started from Kimchi land – back in 2008, the first brand to launch a cushion-type foundation was Korean brand IOPE, with the IOPE Air Cushion. Known more commonly as a BB cushion, the compact contained a sponge (similar to the types you saw at post offices for your stamps) immersed with a seemingly “watered-down” version of a foundation/BB cream that did not compromise on the coverage provided nor the weartime.

This revolutionised make-up application techniques worldwide – besides using powders, we can now touch up using liquid foundations while on the go, and without having to get our hands dirty. The success of this cushion-type of product is evident – AmorePacific Group (which houses brands such as Innisfree, Mamonde, IOPE, Laneige, Sulwhasoo, Etude House etc) has sold more than 100 million cushions since then, clocking one cushion sale every second. Why, even Western beauty stalwarts such as Dior, YSL, Estée Lauder, Bobbi Brown, MAC and more have jumped on the bandwagon, launching their own cushion foundations.

However, the use of a cushion isn’t just limited to a base product – here are some other products that the R&D departments of worldwide brands have churned out.

Concealer: Resembling a thick cotton bud, a cushion-type concealer allows for easy blending of the product without leaving streaks.

Sunblock: Avoid leaving whitish patches on your face with a cushion-type sunscreen – the cushion puff (which can be used to dab, pat or sweep across the face) allows for even application as well as blending. There’s even a version for kids to use!

Brows: Get brows on fleek if you have steady hands – Laneige’s eyebrow cushion compact houses not just two eyebrow shades, but also a foldable dual-tipped applicator. Not an eyebrow expert yet? Fret not, cos PonPon Stampi actually comes with stencils for you to fill in!

Lips: Want to achieve that gradient ombre lip effect often sported by Kpop celebrities? Using a cushion-type lip product will make it much easier – there are two variations, one where you apply directly using the cushion tip, and the other where you use the extra cushion tip to blend out the lip colour.

Colour correctors: New to the block are colour correctors in cushion form – now, you can fix that sallowness, redness or lack of radiance using these products, some of which can even create a light no-make-up finish. Mostly available in mint, lavender, and pink shades.

Cushion Foundations: Last, but certainly not the least, the product that started the cushion revolution – BB cushions (as they are more commonly known in Korea). Cushion-type foundations have thankfully evolved to now encompass more shades and different finishings (dewy, matte, high/natural coverage etc). What’s more, you have a choice of Korean or Western brands to choose from.
