When Shiseido bought MatchCo earlier this year, it generated a big buzz in the beauty community. Could this be the end of embarrassing mismatched foundation? The innovative app, which currently accepts US orders only, allows users to take skin scans and then creates a perfectly matched all-in-one foundation complete with the client’s name and the date it was made.

In the future, this level of bespoke service will most likely be commonplace in the cosmetics industry. But for now, we will have to make do with the tried-and-tested method of going up to beauty counters and asking to try everything in sight.

Read on for the PretAirporter guide to foolproof foundation:

Once you’ve figured out which foundations you want to test, remember not to just swatch it on your wrist. For best results, always test foundation shades against your jawline. Don’t be afraid to line multiple colours up side by side so you can see which is the best match for you. What you’re looking for is the one that is almost imperceptible.

In an airport duty free setting, natural light can sometimes be hard to come by. So if you can, try to hone down your selection beforehand and then hit the airport stores with your exact shades written down and take advantage of that discount.
